(Edit 2018: If I have not made this clear already, I have paid to go to Kenmare EVERY time. We’ve gone with our two boys for a third time since this post too! This is in no way sponsored and I was given nothing by them in exchange. It’s just an honest review! )
We have a favourite place to go in Ireland and that is Kenmare in Kerry. We took an impromptu ‘honeymoon’ there (with Devin) and we had the most relaxing time. We’ve stayed in the Kenmare Bay Hotel & Resort twice now and when we go, we stay in the the self-catering lodges – which are just absolutely perfect when you have little ones with you!
I feel self-catering is the only way to have a family holiday, and in this case it means all the luxury of a hotel stay but the kids still have their own room, so you won’t need to settle down for the evening when it’s their bedtime!
I found Kenmare Bay on the recommendation of another mom when I asked about family friendly places to stay in Ireland. A lot of places claim to be family friendly and they may genuinely be fine with children, but you find that their clientele are not. Kenmare in general is just a lovely place to be with children…but in particular the Kenmare Bay is perfect for a family break away. We’ve been there when Devin was a baby and then when he was 2 ½ years!
The Self-Catering Lodges are absolutely gorgeous. They are 4* and pure luxury! You have everything you need and full access to the leisure centre facilities. (Swimming Pool, Sauna, Steam Rooms etc.) I spent waaay too long in the hot tub….mmmmmmm! Each lodge has a high chair and travel cot and stair gates are provided in the 2 storey lodges. You have your own private back garden for the kids to play in and a BBQ is available on request. And when it’s raining (which happens a lot in Ireland) there’s kids TV channels in all the rooms and a play room in the main hotel.
Things to Do
Kenmare town is just absolutely gorgeous. It’s so colourful and beautiful and there are always stalls out during the day selling fresh seafood, vegetables, local crafts and even clothes! There’s plenty to do in terms of activities too – walks, bike rides and scenic drives around the Ring of Kerry.
There’s also Star Outdoors which is only about 10 minutes away from the Resort. They provide a range of land (archery, paintballing etc) and water based activities, including kayaking, canoeing, pedal boats, sailing, banana boats, water skiing and safari cruises. We went Kayaking with Devin and then went on the water trampoline and slide! The water was freezing but it was SO much fun…even for a 2 ½ year old and a pregnant lady!
Well that’s my little review over, so if you are looking for a lovely family break in Ireland this summer you definitely need to look up the Kenmare Bay Hotel and Resort!
