Review: Cocoa Brown Gentle Bronze Gradual Tan

Cocoa Brown Tan

Cocoa Brown Tan is, without a doubt, Ireland’s most popular tan!  After hearing so many good things about the brand across the blogging community I decided to give it a go, to see what all the hype was about!

Cocoa Brown Tan

It’s been so many years since I’ve used a self tanner, so easing myself in gently was the only way to go!  I’ve been using Gentle Bronze, which is a gradual tanner – and hands down the best one I’ve ever used.

I had tried various gradual tanners over the years including the most popular ones by St. Tropez, Dove and Johnson’s.  I never liked them and I never finished a bottle.  They always seemed so “wet”.  It was uncomfortable, I would end up getting clammy during the night and if I applied it to my face – I’d be so shiny for the next two days!  Don’t even get me started on the smell!

Gentle Bronze is like no gradual tan that I’ve used before.  Here’s why…

1. It Dries Fast!

This actually shocked me, considering my past experiences and my loathing of the “wet” feel!  It isn’t even described as being fast drying – but this is something I noticed immediately.

I actually put it onto my face first, and within a couple of minutes it was dry and there was no shine off it at all.  Next I did my legs, still half expecting I’d be sitting around for 20 minutes waiting for it to dry – but I was able to put my PJs on within minutes!  Super impressive!

2. It Smells Nice!

It’s gentle floral fragrance is actually quite nice!  Most of the time these tanning moisturisers have such an overpowering smell that it literally gives me a headache! (I sound like a Diva!)  But honestly, I could actually wear this as an everyday moisturiser – it’s that nice!  Yes, you will still get that tan smell after a couple of hours – but after my shower the next morning, that smell is gone!

3. Applies Easily and It’s MOISTURISING!

The product literally melts into the skin, there’s none of that frantic wiping with a towel to remove excess product.  You simply rub it in, just as you would a moisturiser, you feel so soft and hydrated but there is absolutely no “fake tan” feeling about it!

I used my fingers for my face, but I probably shouldn’t have because I did end up getting tanned fingers from it!  For my body, I used the Cocoa Brown tanning mitt.  This is SO much better than using gloves.  I applied a small amount to the mitt (see photo below) and was able to do one leg with that amount.  The mitt doesn’t soak up the product so you don’t have to keep reapplying.

4. Really Subtle Colour!

Throughout this post you’ve seen before and after photos after using the product ONCE.  It is incredibly subtle – there’s no orange streaks or “fake” look to it.  Because the colour is so subtle, it makes it a great product for those of us that aren’t regular self tan users – as it allows for those little mistakes!

Of course, it is also buildable!  If you want a more bronzed look, just apply it again the next night!  It actually really enhances a natural tan too!  My feet are more tanned than my legs because I always wear trousers and they look SO dark now (see below!) – and not a hint of orange.  My shoulders also got a great looking tan from it!

Cocoa Brown Tan

All in all, I have to say I am delighted with the Cocoa Brown Gentle Bronze.  I have to say it’s definitely one to try, so if you’re in Ireland – it’s available in Tesco, Boots, Superdrug and Penneys!  It is also available to buy internationally on

If you give it a go, let me know what you think – this one won’t disappoint!
